Meningitis C (MenC)
Protection against meningitis C
Anyone can get meningitis C. It is more common in infants and babies but young people and adults, especially the elderly are also vulnerable. Vaccinations introduced in recent years have gone a long way to reducing the number of cases of meningitis C seen in this country.
The UK immunisation programme continues to evolve, meeting the demand to improve the control of infectious diseases through vaccination. Protect against meningitis C
- It’s vital to know the symptoms and what to do if you suspect your patient has meningitis C
- Babies and children are more vulnerable to meningitis C, as their immune systems aren’t fully developed
- Vaccinated children are less likely to be a source of infection to others
- Vaccination will reduce the risk if unvaccinated individuals are being exposed to infection. This concept is sometimes called ‘herd immunity’
