Best Practice in Vaccination

A peer reviewed educational video:

Immunisation is second only to clean water in its benefits to public health. Nurses in general practice have the privilege of administering the majority of vaccinations in the UK, both for the child and adult immunisation programmes and for those requiring vaccines before travelling abroad.

Guidelines and recommendations for the administration of vaccines change regularly, and it is important that practice nurses keep up to date to deliver safe and effective care. In this video, current best practice in immunising infants and adults is demonstrated according to the latest UK guidance.

The script has been written and performed by two leading experts in immunisation in the UK.
Adrienne Willcox is nurse director at A Talent 4 Health Ltd, a role that combines educational, authoring, consultancy and clinical work. With experience in pre-travel and post-travel health care, Adrienne maintains a clinical role in immunisation. She is completing a PhD in travel health, and is the first nurse to be awarded a research grant from the International Society of Travel Medicine.

Dr George Kassianos is a General Practitioner, and a founding member, honorary secretary, and spokesperson for the British Travel Health Association. He is a member of the education committee of the International Society of Travel Medicine, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) Advisory Committee on Malaria Prophylaxis in UK Travellers, the advisory board of the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC), and the HPA’s Immunisation Standards Board. He lectures widely on vaccines and travel health, and the fifth edition of his book, Immunisation: Childhood and Travel Health, is in preparation for publication.

The video has been reviewed by immunisation specialist Pauline MacDonald, independent consultant nurse and managing director, Infection Matters Limited, and by Jeannett Martin, who is regional director for RCN South West region, editor in chief of Practice Nursing journal, a former practice nurse, and an educator whose main clinical interests are vaccination and travel health.

This video provides a valuable update for healthcare professionals that vaccinate.
